As part of our commitment to supporting our customers through the Brexit transition and beyond we have just completed commissioning of both our SISCIN and MailMeter cloud platforms from our new UK data centre location. Both platforms are available immediately from the UK to both our existing customers and any other organisation that requires assured data sovereignty and UK data residency.
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), Brexit and UK Data Centres
“The UK is leaving the EU (European Union)! What does this mean for my cloud data?”
The UK left the EU on 31 January and entered a transition period. During this transition period, which ends on 31 December 2020, it is business as usual for data protection, however starting 2021 things will change, if you operate inside the UK, you will need to comply with UK Data Protection Law 2018.
Where is your data?
Our UK customers can now rest assured that their data can be stored within the boundaries of UK laws while maintaining the same level of protection that their previous locations provide.
Our CEO Lorcan Kennedy said “the growing demand for capacity and the arrival of Brexit was the key motivation for the company to expand its data centre footprint. We are committed to serving our growing number of UK clients and addressing their concerns over where their data resides.”
We apply GDPR standards for all users in all countries, even if the local regulations allow lower standards. Our UK customers can be safe in the knowledge that their data will not be leaving the UK.
Why are UK data centres important?
Data sovereignty is important to may organisations and the need to assure that data does not unknowingly cross international borders is now more important than ever. When it comes to data residency and compliance, Waterford Technologies has always maintained that customers should control their data. We never transfer your data between data centres or regions.
Data Residency – Data at rest can now be located in the UK for both file and email archives, remember that for your added security and assurance, file and email data stored within our platforms is individually encrypted at rest
Waterford Technologies continues to invest heavily in their infrastructure as more regions are added throughout Europe and beyond.
Looking into what else is planned in the short term, Kennedy also says that Waterford Technologies will be looking at additional data centres across Europe and is planning to bring both Australia and Canada online in the next two months to meet increasing demand from those regions. We will continue to offer choice for organisations when choosing data centre locations based on local regulatory requirements and to specify which data sovereignty regulations we can meet.
